Ride of Silence Recap

22 05 2011

Bikesport’s 2nd Annual Ride of Silence took place on Wednesday as planned. I am very happy that we were able to ride between the rain drops. Numbers were a little lower this year than last, I’ll blame that on the weather. We rode an easy 7 mile loop in silence, paying respect to cyclists that have been killed or injured by cars. We left the former SuperFresh parking lot, turning left on Main Street, a right on 7th Avenue, right on route 29 and a right on Main Street to return to the shopping center. I apologize to those drivers whom we delayed about 30 seconds and thank you to the lady that very politely reminded us there was a trail right there. Further cementing the need for a ride such as this.

I also met a fellow cycling blogger, Matteo Favero, check out his blog Fuji Crazy! He has a great video up of the ride and a couple of pictures. Including a picture of Pat’s tall bike!

Ride of Silence

Update: Ride of Silence update for tomorrow night. If severe weather, we will meet at Bikesport at 7 p.m. for a candlelight vigil, moment of silence, discussion of road cycling safety. If you go to the ride at Trappe Center and don’t see us in front of the former SuperFresh market, come directly to Bikesport. Light rain means we WILL ride. Threat of thunderstorms cancels. Updates will also be provided on Bikesport’s webpage – www.bikesportbikes.com

Bikesport will be hosting its 2nd Annual Ride of Silence on Wednesday, May 18th. Meet at 6:30PM in the former SuperFresh lot in the Trappe Shopping Center. The ride will leave at 7 PM for a slow 7 miles, it is for all levels of cyclists. This ride is rain or shine and helmets are required.

The Ride of Silence is a way for cyclists to honor those who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. The ride is held around the globe and it is a silent ride. The ride was started in 2003 in Dallas, TX by Chris Phelan after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was hit by the mirror of a passing bus and was killed.

The Ride of Silence is a free ride, there are no sponsors and no registration fees. The ride, which is held during National Bike Month, aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways.
